The F Series is BMW’s parallel-twin range. The F 650 GS twin, F 700 GS, F 800 GS, F 800 GT, F 800 R and F 800 ST all use essentially the same 798 cc engine: a water-cooled DOHC twin with eight valves and an 82 x 75.6 mm bore and stroke. BMW tuned it differently for each model, so bikes that share the hardware leave the factory with different power outputs. The F 650 GS twin was built from 2008 to 2012, when the F 700 GS replaced it, and the F 800 GS ran from 2008 to 2019. The older F 650 GS single in our table is a different bike, with a 652 cc Rotax single built from 2000 to 2007. The F 850 GS moved to an 853 cc twin with a 270-degree crankshaft and was built from 2018 to 2024.

Our HP2 table covers three bikes: the Enduro, Megamoto and Sport. The HP2 Enduro is an off-road machine that took the 1,170 cc air/oil-cooled boxer twin and the electronics of the R 1200 GS. Where the GS uses BMW’s Telelever front end, the Enduro has a conventional fork, and the changes made it about 53 lb (24 kg) lighter than the R 1200 GS. Only around 2,910 were built. Because the engine and electronics come from the R 1200 GS, the Enduro is a close relative of the air/oil-cooled GS in our R Series table. We cover the Megamoto and Sport as well, but the details above are specific to the Enduro.

The K Series is BMW’s water-cooled inline-four range, plus the six-cylinder K 1600. The K 1200 S arrived in 2004 and opened the revised K range, and the K 1200 R naked bike followed in 2005. The K 1200 GT tourer was built from 2003 to 2008; its second generation, from 2006, shares essentially the same engine as the K 1200 S and R. Capacity grew to 1,300 cc for the K 1300 S, introduced for 2008, and the K 1300 R naked bike of 2009. The K 1600 GT went on sale in March 2011 with a 1,649 cc inline six mounted across the frame, which BMW claims is the narrowest in-line six ever produced. It has electronic throttle control and a choice of drive modes.

The R Series is built around BMW’s flat-twin boxer engine. The R 1200 GS, which Cycle World credited with creating the adventure-touring category, uses a 1,170 cc boxer with four valves per cylinder: air/oil-cooled from 2004 to 2012, then air/liquid-cooled (the “LC”) from 2013 to 2019. The 2008 GS added Automatic Stability Control, and 2010 brought a DOHC cylinder head. The R 1250 GS moved to a 1,254 cc liquid-cooled boxer with ShiftCam, which switches each intake valve between a part-throttle and an open-throttle cam lobe. The R 1200 RT went from a 1,170 cc flat twin to a water-cooled boxer for 2014, and the R nineT (2014 to 2023) keeps the 1,170 cc air/oil-cooled engine but swaps Telelever for a USD telescopic fork.

All three S Series bikes use versions of one engine: a 999 cc liquid-cooled 16-valve DOHC inline-four with an 80 x 49.7 mm bore and stroke. The S 1000 RR superbike was introduced in Munich in April 2008 and built to compete in the 2009 Superbike World Championship. It launched with Wet, Sport and Race modes, and its ABS and dynamic traction control were described as a first for a road-going superbike at the time. The 2019 RR added ShiftCam, which varies intake valve timing and lift and switches cams at 9,000 rpm, with Rain, Road, Dynamic and Race modes as standard. The S 1000 R naked bike, made since 2014, uses a detuned RR engine set up for low and mid-range power. The S 1000 XR, in production from April 2015, has an engine derived from the S 1000 R and RR.
