Which A3 engines gain the most?

The A3’s smallest gains come from the first-generation petrols without a turbo. The 8L 1.8 20v goes from 125 to 138 bhp (+10%), a gain of 13 bhp. The same car with the 1.8T turbo engine is a different proposition: the 150 bhp version rises to 192 bhp (+28%).

That pattern carries through every turbo petrol generation since. The 8P 1.8 TFSI goes from 160 to 200 bhp (+25%), and its 8V successor, the 1.8 TFSI 177, from 177 to 233 bhp (+31%).

On the diesel side, the 8P is worth a closer look because it is the generation where the 2.0 TDI changed injection systems. The Pumpe Düse version (2003–2008) and the common-rail version that replaced it (2008–2013) give similar results at the same output: the 140 bhp PD engine goes to 175 bhp (+25%) and the 140 bhp common-rail engine to 179 bhp (+27%), while both 170 bhp versions finish at 204 bhp (+20%). A3 generations we cover

The 8L (Typ 8L, September 1996–2003) sits on the PQ34 platform and launched as a three-door, with a five-door added in 1999. Our 8L list covers the 1.6 and 1.8 petrols, the 1.8T turbo at 150 and 180 PS, and 1.9 TDI diesels from 90 to 130 PS.

The 8P (Typ 8P, 2003–2013) moved to the PQ35 platform and came as a three-door, a five-door Sportback and, from 2008, a cabriolet. It brought turbo petrols in 1.4 TFSI (125 PS), 1.8 TFSI (160 PS) and 2.0 TFSI (200 PS) form, plus the 3.2 VR6 at 250 PS, alongside the PD and common-rail 2.0 TDI.

The 8V (Typ 8V, 2012–2020) is built on the MQB platform and added a saloon to the three-door, Sportback and cabriolet (from October 2013). Its turbo petrols include the 1.0 TFSI three-cylinder (2016–2020), the 1.2, 1.4 and 1.5 TFSI and the 1.8 TFSI, alongside 1.6 and 2.0 TDI diesels.
