Yes. A remap changes the software in your car’s engine control unit (ECU), not the engine’s mechanical parts, so the ECU can be given its standard software again. Below we explain what that involves, what it doesn’t undo, and what BHP UK says about it.
The ECU is the computer that controls the engine: turbo boost, fuel injection, ignition timing, fuel rail pressure, throttle response and more. It runs those functions from software stored inside it. A remap changes that software. On our van pages we describe modern remapping as “simply just a software upgrade, nothing more!”
Returning a car to standard means putting standard software back on the ECU, so it runs the engine as it did before the remap. It is done with the same kind of access used to remap it in the first place. Most modern cars are reprogrammed through the OBD diagnostic port. Some ECUs are read and written with the unit removed (bench) or opened (boot mode). Our guide to OBD, bench and boot-mode remapping explains each one.
Our position is simple: “We can always return your car to standard should you ever need it to.”
And our guarantee: “All our ECU Remapping comes with a 14 day 100% no quibble guarantee. If you’re not 100% satisfied with the result of your ECU remap we will return your car to standard and give you a full refund. (T&Cs apply)”

A remap is often one part of a bigger upgrade. We remap modified cars too, including those fitted with a larger turbo, an induction kit, cams or an exhaust system. Returning the ECU to standard changes only the software. The hardware stays as it is.
That is worth thinking about before you go back to standard on a modified car, because changes to the exhaust or intake can alter the air-fuel mixture. If your car has other modifications, tell us about them when you call.
A tuning box is a separate module fitted between the engine’s sensors and the ECU, and it doesn’t rewrite the ECU’s software. It comes off by removing the module. A remap is reversed by writing standard software back to the ECU. Our remap vs tuning box guide compares the two in full.

No. Returning to standard changes the ECU's software only. An aftermarket exhaust, intake or turbo stays on the car until it is physically removed.
