Which A4 engines gain the most?
Across five generations of A4, the clearest split in our figures is between the turbocharged engines and the naturally aspirated petrols of the B5 and B6. The B5 2.8 V6 goes from 190 to 201 bhp (+5%) and the B6 3.0 V6 from 215 to 226 bhp (+5%), a gain of 11 bhp each.
The turbocharged engines respond very differently. The B8’s 1.8 TFSI 120, a much smaller engine, goes from 120 to 160 bhp (+33%). The turbo diesels gain strongly too: the B7 2.0 TDI PD 140 moves from 140 to 188 bhp (+34%), with torque up from 334 to 424 Nm.
The 268 bhp B8 3.0 TFSI built from 2012 to 2015 is the odd one out. It is supercharged rather than turbocharged, and our remap takes it from 268 to 330 bhp (+23%).
A4 generations we cover
The B5 (Typ 8D, 1994–2001) was built as a saloon and Avant on the PL45 platform. Our B5 list runs from the naturally aspirated 1.6, 1.8, 2.0 and 2.8 V6 petrols to the 1.8T and the 1.9 TDI and 2.5 TDI V6 diesels.
The B6 (Typ 8E, with the Cabriolet as Typ 8H, 2000–2005) moved to the PL46 platform. It kept the 1.8T, added the 2.0 FSI direct-injection petrol and the 3.0 V6, and carried on with 1.9 TDI and 2.5 TDI V6 diesels.
The B7 (2004–2009) stayed on the same PL46 platform as the B6. It brought the 2.0 TFSI turbo petrol at 200 PS, plus a 220 PS DTM version, alongside the 2.0 TDI and the 2.7 and 3.0 TDI V6 diesels.
The B8 (Typ 8K, 2007–2016) moved to the MLB platform and added the allroad quattro to the saloon and Avant. Petrol options run from the 1.8 and 2.0 TFSI turbo four-cylinders to the 3.2 FSI V6 (2007–2011) and the supercharged 3.0 TFSI (engine code CMUA); diesels include the 2.0 TDI and the 2.7 and 3.0 TDI V6s.
The B9 (Typ 8W, 2015–2025), on MLB Evo, came as a saloon and Avant. Our B9 list includes the 1.4 TFSI and the 2.0 TDI, sold as the 30, 35 and 40 TDI.
