Which S4 engines gain the most?

The S4 has changed engine with every generation we cover, and each change alters what a remap can do. In turn it has used a twin-turbo V6, a 4.2 V8, a supercharged V6 and, most recently, a single-turbo V6.

On the B8’s supercharged 3.0 TFSI, our remap takes the car from 329 to 387 bhp (+17%), with torque rising from 440 to 498 Nm (+13%).

The 4.2 V8 in the B6 is the one to set your expectations differently for. Its published specification lists no turbo or supercharger, and our table shows a much smaller percentage gain for it than for the forced-induction S4s either side of it.

The B9’s 3.0 TFSI is turbocharged, using a single twin-scroll turbo in place of the B8’s supercharger. It is listed in our S4 table, but our figures for it are still in development.

S4 generations we cover

The B5 S4 (Typ 8D, 1997–2002) came as a saloon and, from 1998, an Avant. Its 2.7 V6 twin-turbo made 265 PS in Europe. Our table lists it under both its B5 and 8D codes.

The B6 S4 (2003–2005) added a Cabriolet in 2004–2005 alongside the saloon and Avant, and switched to a 4.2 V8 (engine code BBK) with 344 PS.

The B8 S4 (Typ 8K, 2009–2016), as a saloon and Avant, replaced the V8 with the 3.0 V6 TFSI (engine code CAKA), supercharged by an Eaton TVS unit and rated at 333 PS.

The B9 S4 (Typ 8W, 2017–2025), again a saloon and Avant, uses the turbocharged 3.0 TFSI (EA839) with 354 PS and 500 Nm. In Europe it was also sold from 2019 as a 3.0 TDI diesel.
