Every TT engine quoted here is turbocharged, so the useful comparison is between outputs within the same engine family, and the lower the factory figure, the larger the percentage gain tends to be. The Mk1’s 1.8T shows this clearly: the 150 bhp version goes to 192 bhp (+28%), while the 225 bhp quattro version, at the top of the same family, goes to 265 bhp (+17%).
The Mk3 repeats the pattern across its range. The 1.8 TFSI goes from 180 to 234 bhp (+30%) and the 2.0 TFSI from 230 to 278 bhp (+20%), while the TTS at 306 bhp moves to 338 bhp (+10%). The TT RS sits outside that family, with a 2.5-litre five-cylinder turbo, and goes from 394 to 444 bhp (+12%).
Mk1 owners should check whether their car is a coupe or a Roadster, because at two power levels our figures differ between them. The 225 bhp coupe finishes at 265 bhp, the 225 bhp Roadster at 252 bhp (+12%), and at 180 bhp the coupe reaches 212 bhp against the Roadster’s 205 bhp.
The Mk1 (8N, 1998–2006) was built as a coupe and Roadster. Its 1.8T 20-valve turbo four-cylinder was offered at 150, 163, 180, 190 and 225 PS, and the 2005–2006 quattro Sport version (engine code BFV) made 240 PS.
The Mk2 (8J, 2006–2014) moved to the 1.8 and 2.0 TFSI turbo petrols, and added a common-rail 2.0 TDI diesel at 170 PS from 2008. The TTS arrived in 2008 with a 272 PS 2.0 TFSI, and the TT RS from 2009 used a 2.5 TFSI five-cylinder at 340 PS, with a 360 PS TT RS plus from 2012.
The Mk3 (8S, 2014–2023) is built on the MQB platform. The 2.0 TFSI produces 230 PS in the TT, while the TTS launched at 310 PS and was rated at 306 PS from 2019 to 2021. The TT RS 2.5 TFSI five-cylinder makes 400 PS, and the 2.0 TDI launched at 184 PS.
