Which Q3 engines gain the most?

Every first-generation Q3 engine is turbocharged, from the 1.4 TFSI to the RS Q3’s five-cylinder, and the second generation carries on with TFSI petrols and TDI diesels. The differences in our figures therefore come from fuel type and engine size rather than induction.

The second-generation Q3 shows the fuel difference clearly, because its two 35-badged engines start from the same 148 bhp. The 35 TDI diesel goes to 180 bhp (+21%) and its torque from 340 to 400 Nm. The 35 TFSI petrol, a 1.5-litre from the EA211 EVO family, goes to 170 bhp (+14%) with torque rising from 300 to 341 Nm. From the same starting point, the diesel gains 32 bhp and 60 Nm against the petrol’s 22 bhp and 41 Nm.

The 40 TDI and 40 TFSI in the second-generation Q3 are listed in our table, but our figures for them are still in development.

Q3 generations we cover

The first-generation Q3 (Typ 8U, 2011–2018) is a five-door SUV. Its 2.0 TFSI turbo petrol came at 170 and 211 PS from 2011 to 2014, and a 150 PS 1.4 TFSI followed from 2013. The 2.0 TDI diesel was offered at 140 and 177 PS from 2011 to 2014. The RS Q3 (2013–2016) used a 2.5-litre turbocharged five-cylinder at 310 PS, rising to 340 PS for 2015–2016, and a 367 PS performance version arrived in 2016.

The second-generation Q3 (Typ F3, August 2018–June 2025) moved to the MQB A2 platform and added a Sportback alongside the SUV. Its engines come from four families: the 1.5 TFSI (EA211 EVO), the 2.0 TFSI (EA888), the 2.0 TDI, and the 2.5-litre five-cylinder in the RS Q3.
