|---|---|---|---|---|
| Q5 8RB | 2008–2016 | 15 | +14% to +41% | +112 bhp (+41%) 3.0 TFSI |
| Q5 FY | 2018–present | 5 | +21% | +32 bhp (+21%) 35 2.0 TDI |
Every first-generation Q5 engine in our list has a turbocharger or supercharger, and the clearest contrast in our figures is between the petrol and diesel 2.0-litre four-cylinders at similar outputs. The 2.0 TFSI turbo petrol at 177 bhp goes to 238 bhp (+34%), while the common-rail 2.0 TDI at 170 bhp goes to 200 bhp (+17%). The diesel still finishes with more torque: 420 Nm against the petrol’s 394 Nm.
Among the diesels, the percentages are close but the V6 gives the bigger step. The 150 bhp 2.0 TDI goes to 183 bhp (+22%), a 33 bhp increase, while the 3.0 TDI V6 at 236 bhp moves to 292 bhp (+23%), a 56 bhp increase, with torque up from 500 to 581 Nm.
For the second-generation Q5, the 35 TDI goes from 148 to 180 bhp (+21%). The other FY engines in our table, including the 40 TDI and 50 TDI, are still in development.
The first-generation Q5 (Typ 8R, July 2008–2017) is a five-door SUV on the MLB platform. Its 2.0 TFSI turbo petrol was offered at 180, 211 and 225 PS, and a supercharged 3.0 TFSI V6 at 272 PS joined the range in 2012–2013. The diesels are all common rail: the 2.0 TDI at 143, 150, 170 and 177 PS, and the 3.0 TDI V6 at 240 PS from 2008, then 245 PS and 258 PS from 2012 and 2013. The SQ5 TDI from 2013 used a twin-turbo version of the 3.0 V6 diesel at 313 PS.
The second-generation Q5 (Typ FY, September 2016–February 2025) moved to MLB evo and added a Sportback alongside the SUV. Its 2.0 TDI is sold as the 35 and 40 TDI with mild-hybrid assistance, and the SQ5 switched to a 3.0 TFSI V6 with a twin-scroll turbo (EA839).
