Which 5 Series engines gain the most?
The E60 and F10 M5s show how much turbocharging changes what a remap can add. The E60 M5’s naturally aspirated S85 5.0 V10 goes from 500 to 521 bhp (+4%). The F10 M5 that replaced it uses the twin-turbo S63 4.4 V8 and goes from 553 to 647 bhp (+16%), a gain of 94 bhp against 21.
The F10 528i makes the same point with one badge. Early cars (2010–2011) used the naturally aspirated N53 3.0 six and go from 255 to 277 bhp (+8%). Later cars switched to the N20 2.0 turbo four-cylinder, which goes from 240 to 290 bhp (+20%), so the smaller engine ends up the stronger of the two after a remap.
Every 5 Series diesel is turbocharged, and the diesels generally gain more than petrols of the same era. The 2007–2010 E60 535d goes from 282 to 351 bhp (+24%), and the 2011–2014 F10 520d, which uses the N47 2.0 four-cylinder, goes from 181 to 223 bhp (+23%). On the G30, the B47-engined 518d and 520d go from 148 to 185 bhp (+25%) and 188 to 218 bhp (+15%); most other G30 figures, including every petrol and the 530e, are still in development.
5 Series generations we cover
E39 (1995–2004). Launched as a saloon, with the Touring estate added in 1996; the M5 was a saloon only, powered by the S62 5.0 V8. Petrol models used M52 and M54 straight-sixes and M62 V8s, and the diesels used the M47 2.0 four and M57 2.5 and 3.0 sixes.
E60/E61 (2003–2010). The E60 saloon and E61 Touring brought the N52 and then N53 sixes, the N62 V8s, a 535i with the twin-turbo N54 and an M5 with the S85 V10.
F10/F11/F18 (2010–2017). Saloon, Touring and a long-wheelbase F18 saloon for China and some other markets. The 520i and 528i moved to the N20 turbo four, the 535d used a twin-turbo N57 and the M550d a triple-turbo N57S.
G30/G31/G38 (2016–2023). Saloon, Touring and a China-only long-wheelbase G38, facelifted in May 2020. Engines are the B47 and B57 diesels, B48 and B58 petrols, and the twin-turbo N63 V8 in the M550i; the 530e is a B48-based plug-in hybrid.
