The move from the E63/E64 to the F06/F12/F13 took the 6 Series from naturally aspirated sixes and a V10 M6 to turbocharged petrol engines, and our figures follow it. The E63 M6’s naturally aspirated S85 5.0 V10 goes from 507 to 535 bhp (+5%), and the 2007–2010 630i’s naturally aspirated N53 3.0 six from 272 to 287 bhp (+5%).
The F12-generation 650i uses the twin-turbo N63 4.4 V8. The 2011–2013 version goes from 402 to 465 bhp (+15%) and the later 443 bhp version reaches 535 bhp (+20%), the same peak power as a remapped E63 M6 but with 778 Nm of torque against 550 Nm. The 640i’s single-turbo N55 3.0 six goes from 315 to 358 bhp (+13%).
The diesels are turbocharged in both generations, and the later engine gains more. The E63 635d, sold in Europe only, goes from 286 to 316 bhp (+10%); the F12 640d, with the twin-turbo N57 3.0 six, goes from 308 to 368 bhp (+19%).
The G32 Gran Turismo uses only turbocharged engines. So far we have figures for the B47-engined 620d, which goes from 188 to 218 bhp (+15%); the rest of the range is still in development.
E63/E64 (2003–2010). The E63 coupé and E64 convertible were built from July 2003. Petrol engines were the N52 and later N53 3.0 six in the 630i and N62 V8s in the 645Ci and 650i, with the S85 V10 in the M6 and the M57 3.0 turbodiesel six in the 635d.
F06/F12/F13 (2011–2018). The F12 convertible and F13 coupé arrived in March 2011, with the four-door F06 Gran Coupé following in March 2012 and staying in production until September 2018. The M6 of this generation moved to the twin-turbo S63 V8, making it the first turbocharged M6.
G32 (2017–2023). The 6 Series Gran Turismo is a five-door liftback based on the G30 5 Series, built until August 2023 and discontinued without a successor.
